I just saw a presentation today at the middle school that unfortunatly the freshman and seniors at my high school did not see. It was about Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School shooting. She said, "A little bit of kindness can go a long way." And this is true.
Everyone needs to see this presentation or visit her site:
[link]It's crazy how such little words can impact someone so deeply. Depending on the words spoken it could be a postive or negative affect. For the boys who shot the students, they recieved negative words. Remember, you really need to be careful what you say to someone since you don't know what they are feeling. Feelings matter! No one has the right to make anyone feel uncomfortable!
If you want to help promote Rachel's kindness, please take her challenge.
1. Don't be judgemental of others
You don't know what that person may be going through, maybe they had a bad day. Just because someone dresses a little quirky doesn't mean they are evil or freaks. And it's not that person's fault if they were born disabled. You can't tell who someone is by the way they talk, walk, look, etc... One glace won't tell you a thing!
Instead look at their eyes. Observe them from the inside. Imagine how they must feel. Don't assume what they're feeling though because you could be wrong. The best way to get to know someone is to talk to them yourself in person. Try it sometime!
2. Dare to dream
If dreams didn't come true they wouldn't been seen as such a postive influence in many movies and books. Also dreams give people hope and something to live for. No matter how bizzare a dream may be, if that's what keeps someone going from one day to the next... it's pretty important.
Also, dreams don't come true unless you put some effort into it! You can't expect to become a moviestar overnight. For example: A boy dreams of being a star basket ball player playing in the NBA. Even if he never makes it there, just by playing the sport should give him joy since his imagination will do the rest as far as being in the NBA goes.
3. Write out your goals
Even if they aren't on paper, knowing what you want to do with your life is important. You only live once, so having some sort of blueprint to follow will be nice. It will help you make choices for college and job opertunities.
Also, if you really have no idea what you want to do with your life, you are still obligated to do these things:
Do your best
Be the best person you can be
By doing these things, it can take you a long way. Try it!
4. Have good influences in your life
It's funny how easily influenced we are so make sure you have good role models. If you don't believe me, my friend was told in kindergarten that if she ate a glazed potato chip she'd get diarria. She didn't eat those chips for 2yrs. Aslo the pictures in magazines and media have a huge impact on the future and current generations.
BUT! Bet you didn't know that your parents are actually your biggest influences because you live with them. Most kids take after their parents. Friends are also another big influence. Sometimes they cause you to do something dumb to impress them. Be careful.
5. Tell the people you love how much you love them.
Don't joke about it either. You never know when it may be the last time you see them. If you say it right, I'm sure that person will never forget that moment!
Now, I'd like to say that I love my parents and I thank them for supporting me and teaching me how to be responsible. I love you, Angela and Amanda for supporting me and inspiring me all the time.Thank you Jackie for all the laughs, I love you so much! Thank you Stevie and Nikki O for hearing me out all the time, you have no idea how much this helps me! Thank you Lindsay for also inspiring me and modeling for me! Thank you others (old friends and mean people at school) for teaching me that life goes on and I must be strong.
I accept her challenge and I hope you will to!
